Tell us about your business journey so far?

I’ve worked in the industry for 26 years. I started in a hairdressing salon where I had a small beauty room and a manicure table. This suited me for many years until babies came along. I took a break from the industry as the hours didn’t work with a young family, I studied Business Admin and worked a 9-5 Monday to Friday job until the kids were a little older and more self-sufficient.

Following my break from the industry, I felt it was important to refresh my training. Much had changed within the industry, with the focus now being more on well-being, spa treatments and preventative techniques. I studied a Diploma of Beauty Therapy and have completed many post grad studies since then. My return to the industry was through being employed in day spas and a resort spa, then onto to beauty salons to focus on more results driven skin treatments.

Nearly 3 years ago I had the opportunity to rent my own space in my local fitness centre. Too good an opportunity to refuse I jumped on the chance to operate as a sole trader. I’ve never looked back and my business continues to go from strength to strength.

What attracted you to the Beauty Industry?

I’ve always pottered around making my own products, clay masks, creams, lotions and potions, blending essential oils, making perfumes, and enjoyed the aesthetics of makeup, enhancing features etc.

I truly enjoy meeting new people and putting them at ease. All qualities essential in this industry.

What’s the one thing you would advise women starting out in your industry or starting their own business?

Be prepared to work hard for very little reward, get used to cleaning, cleaning and more cleaning. People often say to me “wow you have such a glamourous job” nothing could be further from the truth.

You absolutely need to keep training and furthering your skills. It’s a fast-moving industry with trends changing constantly. You need to be one step ahead and make time to research and study new techniques. Your Diploma is the bare minimum entry level qualification.

Before opening a business go and visit different salons, spas and skin clinics, you need experience, try different product ranges, techniques, soak up knowledge from your mentors. Find your own passion and niche.
